Do you smile when you see a parade?  Does the sound of John Phillip Sousa bring your soul to attention?  The thrill of all of this can be yours by taking lessons with the Gangi Bay State Strutters (GBSS).  Baton twirling lessons have much to offer to our youth.  Besides developing reading skills through hand-eye coordination, self-confidence, a sense of rhythm, ambidexterity, physical fitness, and fun are just a few of the rewards to be gained from participating in this activity.  Twirling is for girls and boys, and includes both individual and group events.  We offer instruction ranging from the recreational level through competition twirling at the national level.  Twirling is a thrilling activity for performers and audiences alike.

Beginner Instruction

Instruction is provided in basic twirls and dance.  Twirling tricks such as horizontals and figure-8's are learned and form the foundation on which to build stronger and more creative choreography.  Rhythm and flexibility are developed through the incorporation of music into the class, coupled with ballet and jazz dance moves and stretches such as splits, kicks and leaps.

Basic marching is a cornerstone to our class instruction, with a focus on technique and identification of the downbeat.  The accomplished student masters this as the backbone to all traveling twirling routines, such as downfield strut for the football field, parade routines and competition strutting.

Primary and secondary school students are integrated into group baton twirling lessons as the first tier of instruction.  While the main objective is personal growth and individual development, the group setting also lends to the introduction of teamwork as well as friendship and camaraderie.

All students are encouraged to participate in performances such as parades, basketball & football game halftimes and shows.

In addition to public performances, students have the option of entering baton twirling competitions.  GBSS has a long history of competing in not only local competitions, but championships on the state, regional and national level.

Advanced Instruction

Twirlers find personal success with GBSS because of an attention to technical proficiency, creative routine construction and positive coaching.  Students learn to master difficult technical body moves while continuously executing intricate baton skills.  These students supplement group instruction with the second tier of instruction, private lessons.

While everyone loves to win, we Honor the Game and teach life lessons thru baton twirling.  By modeling and encouraging good sportsmanship and teaching good technique, versus winning at all costs, our students are successful on the competition floor and take that confidence with them into the classroom and ultimately into the boardroom.

For those looking to take their twirling to the next level, Miss Tracey, as the head coach, will develop a game plan on how to get there.

Twirling Contributes to Physical Fitness

Baton twirling is a physical activity, which develops strength, endurance, aerobic conditioning, and flexibility.  Developing the ability to execute skills simultaneously, quickness of motor skills, and hand-eye coordination are enhanced physical attributes.

Twirling Develops Mental Skills

Twirling further develops concentration, memory capacity and the ability to make instantaneous decisions for recoveries.  Students are trained to execute simultaneous responsibilities involving the baton and the body.  Ambidexterity and multiple baton twirling also contribute to the development of bilateral thinking, the ability to think with both sides of the brain simultaneously.

Twirling Develops Team Spirit and Responsibility

As twirling is a team, as well as an individual activity, students experience the fundamentals of team spirit, cooperation, friendship, support and the importance of their role and responsibilities.
